C-17's first Artic landing.
 
 

C-17A -0054 flown by members from the 7th Airlift Squadron, sits on the sea-ice parking ramp at McMurdo Station, Antarctica, after touching down for the first time Oct. 15, 1998. A first for the C-17, this is part of validation tests for future Antarctic missions.

 

 
Maintainers apply heat to the landing gear and engines to prevent the components from  freezing.
